If you’ve struggled with golf pain, it’s likely you’ve encountered a plethora of myths and suggestions from friends, family, and even received outdated advice from healthcare professionals that advocate for rest and dependence on pain medications. This advice often leads to confusion, frustration, and a lack of long-term improvement.
Here are some prevalent myths about golf pain that individuals visiting our Austin and Lakeway clinic have heard, which have not only exacerbated their golf pain issues but also prolonged their recovery process.
MYTH #1 - RESTING IS BEST
One of the biggest myths I hear from people with golf-related pain in Austin is that they’ve been told by other practitioners to simply rest. But many are left wondering: “What exactly does rest mean?” Often, they assume it means doing absolutely nothing, like lying on the couch and hoping the pain will go away on its own, similar to the old days when patients were put on traction in hospitals for weeks.
I always tell people that if you’ve rested for a few days or a week, and the pain remains or returns once you resume your day-to-day activities, there’s likely an underlying cause that needs to be addressed. During recovery, a controlled approach is crucial. For instance, if it’s your shoulder, you may need to limit the intensity of activity, but it’s important to keep it moving to maintain muscle function without overstraining it.
MYTH #2 - BACK PAIN IN GOLF IS INEVITABLE
We hear from patients all the time that it’s “just part of the game” and that all golfers will experience back pain at some point. While back pain is common, it is not inevitable. Many
back issues result from poor swing mechanics, lack of flexibility, or inadequate core strength. Improving physical conditioning and technique can reduce or even prevent back pain.
MYTH #3 - AGE DEFINES YOUR ABILITIES
The third major myth I often hear is the age myth. People come in and say they’ve been told: “You’re doing well for your age.” But I’m here to remind people that age doesn’t have to define you. It shouldn’t be seen as the limiting factor in what you can achieve. Your abilities are not determined solely by how old you are, but by how well you take care of your body and approach recovery and injury prevention.
MYTH #4 - PAIN IN GOLF IS ONLY CAUSED BY SWINGING
Another common myth is that any pain you’re experiencing while playing golf is solely due to your golf swing. While the swing is a common cause of injuries, other factors like walking long distances, carrying or pulling a heavy golf bag, and poor posture during putting can also lead to pain. Proper walking techniques, lighter bags, and attention to your overall posture on the course can minimize pain.
